It addresses the spirit, application, and fundamentals of motivational interviewing (MI), discusses how practitioners can effectively employ MI in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, and provides tools that practitioners can use to encourage and promote lasting positive outcomes for their clients.

This guide describes core elements of screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) programs for people living with or at risk for substance use disorders. It provides information on implementing SBIRT services and covering challenges, barriers, cost, and sustainability.
